Mataroa School
‘Te kino kē hoki’ - ‘TO EXCEL’
SCHOOL VISION :
‘Growing a community of lifelong learners within our classroom, our rural environment and in life.’
'Te tipu i te hapori o nga akonga ako-roa i roto i to taatau akomanga, to taiao me to tatou oranga.’
Mataroa School is a two-teacher primary school (Year 1-8) located in a rural area 10 km Northwest of Taihape. Currently we have 35 pupils.
Tiriraukawa Room, our senior classroom has 21 pupils from Year 4-8.
Koeke Room is our junior room and has 14 pupils from Year 1-3.
The school is located in a rural setting surrounded by farmland. On site we have an administration block, two teaching classrooms, a library, a hall/resource room and two additional learning spaces.
School Establishment
Mataroa School was established in 1900 and was opened in a disused surveyor's whare on the bank of the Hautapu River. 2 years later a new school at Mataroa was built on the present site, a building of 420sq.feet. With the subsequent closures of near by schools (Koeke, Ruanui, Rongoiti, Whaka Road and Tiriraukawa) over the years, Mataroa School grew in size, peaking in 1977 with 96 pupils. However, with the national trend of rural depopulation, numbers and teaching staff have declined over the years.
